Time management: A fulfilled life instead of a full one

Stress and the consequences of stress are an integral part of our capitalist working world and it is no longer possible to imagine life without it. Numerous research results show that work-related stress and excessive workload play a significant role in the development of health complaints and are the third most frequent cause of incapacity to work and early retirement.

Especially time pressure, chronic time stress or constant rushing are typical companions of everyday working life. But it does not have to be like this! Thanks to healthy time management, it is possible to lead a "fulfilled rather than full life".

Everyone is under permanent stress.

Everyone is familiar with stress and probably everyone has experienced the consequences of stress, such as health complaints of a psychosomatic and psychological nature.
Stress-related illnesses should not be underestimated and range from nervous stomach and intestinal complaints, to tension headaches, to chronic illnesses such as heart disease or chronic back pain. But mental illnesses are also becoming more common and are now the third most common cause of incapacity to work and early retirement.

The most common stress triggers are insecure working conditions, high deadline pressure, long working hours, lack of recognition, conflicts with colleagues and superiors, and the incompatibility of family and work.

In addition to the general stress triggers, time pressure, chronic time stress or constant rushing are also among the most common stressors. Combined with factors such as long working hours or lack of recognition, these are often triggers to a stress reaction.

How do you achieve time sovereignty?

As the picture above shows, there are countless reasons for time stress, and unfortunately we are often not entirely uninvolved. The main cause is that we rarely reflect on our own use of time, which means that our own behaviour and attitude often go undetected as contributors to time stress.

In this respect, one of the most important rules for achieving time sovereignty is to prioritise tasks. For each task, you should decide how important and how urgent the task is. The importance is based on one's own goals and the urgency on the time frame in which it should be completed.
The problem is that urgency is often defined by others and targets and deadlines have to be met. However, prioritisation can also be used here: For example, a client meeting is more important than a minor task that does not necessarily have to be completed by the end of the week. It is advisable to look at one's own time management in order to get rid of the feeling that all tasks are equally important and must be completed immediately.

Relief thanks to daily and weekly schedules

But how do you achieve time sovereignty? The solution sounds almost too simple to be true: creating daily and weekly schedules.
In fact, this is one of the simplest and most efficient methods, as plans and to-do lists create an overview, relieve the brain and thus lead to less stress, as tasks, important deadlines or appointments are not forgotten.
The crux, however, lies in the type of planning. The goal is to develop a health-promoting time management instead of an efficient and economical one. The latter often only ensures that more activities are squeezed into a period of time and thus misses the intended motto of "a fulfilled life" instead of "a full life".
It is important to include sufficient buffers in the balance between working time and free time and also times when no activities are planned.
In addition, personal interests and well-being should not be disregarded and prioritised, for example, in the form of free time in the evening!
