Artificial Intelligence

Artificial intelligence: friend or enemy?

Artificial intelligence (AI) is one of the most important technologies of our time and is already being used in many areas of the economy. Since the development of the chatbot "ChatGPT" by OpenAI, the topic of artificial intelligence has also become available to the masses and is increasingly becoming part of everyday life. For many, this development is worrying - but why are people afraid of AI and are their worries justified?

  1. What is artificial intelligence?
  2. Why are so many people afraid of artificial intelligence?
  3. Are the concerns justified?

1. What is artificial intelligence?

Artificial intelligence (AI) refers to the development of intelligent computer systems capable of simulating human cognitive functions such as learning, problem solving, perception and decision making. AI encompasses a wide range of techniques and approaches, including machine learning, natural language processing, computer vision and robotics. The overarching goal of AI is to develop systems that can process information, adapt to new situations and perform tasks autonomously. Thus, a wide range of potentials can be tapped that improve and relieve the work of various industries and the daily lives of people.

2. Why are so many people afraid of artificial intelligence?

Although artificial intelligence is often praised as forward-looking, advantageous and innovative, many people are afraid of it - and for many reasons, which we have summarised at a glance:

  1. Fear of job displacement:
A widespread fear is that AI technologies and automation could replace human workers in many industries, leading to widespread unemployment. This fear stems from the idea that AI systems will perform tasks more efficiently and effectively than humans, potentially making certain jobs obsolete.

  2. Fear of loss of control:
As AI becomes more sophisticated, there is a concern that humans will lose control over the technology. In this sense, the main fear is that AI systems will make decisions and take actions that lead to unpredictable or undesirable outcomes.

  3. Ethical concerns:
Another item on the list is the concern that AI systems will exhibit biased or discriminatory behaviour. The starting point for this could be the bias of the data it has been trained on, which it can reflect and reinforce. This can lead to problems such as unfair treatment, discrimination or invasion of privacy.

  4. Fear of superintelligence:
Some people are concerned about the possible development of very intelligent AI systems that surpass human intelligence in virtually all areas. The fear is that such highly intelligent AI systems could outsmart humans and act in ways that would be harmful to humanity.

  5. On top: sci-fi depictions:
In popular culture, AI is often portrayed in a negative light, describing scenarios in which AI turns against humans or takes over the world. These depictions, even if fictional, contribute to fear and mistrust of AI technologies.

3. Are the concerns justified?

Under no circumstances should possible risks or concerns be neglected or even ignored. Only the future will be able to show whether possible concerns will come to fruition, although in the meantime the numerous benefits and advances should not be forgotten alongside the justified concerns.
The goal should be to promote responsible AI development that addresses ethical concerns and respects and ensures human oversight. Furthermore, there should also be increased education (especially in industries that work heavily with AI) to reduce fears.
