Leadership at eye level: This is how leadership works today!

The world of work never stands still. Constantly there are new process innovations or automations. In order to keep up with the changing requirements or challenges such as virtual leadership, managers have to rethink their traditional methods. In addition, employees are developing more and more specific expertise, which is difficult to keep track of all at once. How can leadership succeed in the new world of work? And how should employees be guided?

1. The shift in the balance of power

In the new age of work, leadership at eye level is unavoidable. Since the advent of human resource management, the expert power of employees has continued to grow and managers hardly have the chance to comprehensively oversee individual subject areas.
In addition, employees are aware of their skills and must be actively tied to the company through incentives.
Leadership is particularly important here, as the formal position of power (hierarchy) is no longer sufficient to convince and motivate employees. Instead, a new balance is required, the so-called leadership at eye level.
Characteristic of this is that the power between managers and employees is balanced and embedded in a culture of appreciation, trust and learning orientation. The focus is less on direct influence by delegating tasks or setting goals, but rather on promoting the employee's self-leadership. Thus the manager takes on the role of a coach who uses his or her power of persuasion and charisma to guide and motivate employees individually.

In order for leadership to succeed at eye level, more communication and exchange of information is often needed. In addition, the leader should ...

  1. be able to hand over responsibility.
  2. "only" set framework conditions and target agreements.
  3. promote individual development.
  4. guide employees to self-leadership.
  5. moderate and organise work processes.
  6. convince and motivate.
  7. create individual qualification opportunities that advance the employee (and thus also the company).

2. Into the future together

Making leadership more eye-to-eye is not only necessary but also promotes a culture of trust, respect and collaboration. By treating employees equally and addressing them individually, communication is promoted, morale is boosted and ultimately a higher level of commitment, productivity and innovation is achieved within the team.
More than ever, a good leadership style is conducive to success and should be actively trained.

At desk.ly, leadership already takes place at eye level. We strive to guide employees in such a way that they can deepen and expand their expert power and knowledge further. This not only creates employee satisfaction, but also retention! Win Win!
